2012 SMH Good Cafe Awards

Great news for the team at Bean Drinking today, when we were awarded 3 Cups in the annual SMH Good Cafe Guide.

Over the past 12 months, the team at Bean Drinking has been working each day to raise our standards and improve on the 2 cups status we were awared back in 2011. Today, it was with great delight that we found out all our hard work at sourcing, roasting and brewing delicious coffee has been recognised.

Huge thanks go to all of the team at Bean Drinking for their continued dedication to brewing some of the best coffee available in Sydney each day.

Long live the bean!


2011 CSR Golden Bean

The annual CSR Sugar Golden Bean competition (this year held in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, between 1st and 3rd December) is the largest coffee roasting competition in Australia, and one of the largest in the world.

Now in it’s 6th year, the competition is a ‘must attend’ event for Australian coffee roasters, and provides an opportunity for roasters and industry members to network as well as providing a forum for learning and exchanging ideas which ultimately raise the quality of coffee that consumers drink in cafes across Australia.

This year, the event attracted over 1,200 entries from coffee roasters across the country. The entries are judged by a panel made up of consumers, industry peers, highly skilled accredited coffee graders, as well as renowned coffee judges and baristas, including Justin Metcalfe, a World Barista Championship judge, and David Makin, an Australian Barista champion. The judges at this year’s event commented that the quality of entries was the highest they had seen to date.

It was a great event to be involved in, and made all the more rewarding as we came away with 3 medals! Silver Medals for our San Antonio Filter coffee and for our Insanity Decaf blend, and a Bronze Medal for our Boots Espresso Blend beating over 250 other entries in that category alone.

Everyone at Bean Drinking is ecstatic about our success at the event especially as its the first time we have entered, and for us as a team to come away with 3 medals gives us all a fantastic sense of achievement.


"ROASTWORKS" Wholesale Division now open!

Since we started roasting back in 2010, we have had a constant stream of requests asking if we are able to provide wholesale coffee.

I am really excited to announce that our Roastworks is now open and able to supply a number of different blends and single origins to other like minded cafes and espresso bars.

Just popped in to say "hi"

Its always great to meet industry professionals and gain a different perspective on the specialty industry. We move forward as an industry when we share ideas and knowledge, and Gwilym has been an advocate of that well before he won the WBC back in 2009.

I was lucky to first meet Gwilym back in 2010, and was blown away by just how open and supportive he was, so it was great he just dropped in and I was able to spend a couple of hours with him again as he was passing through Sydney on his way to NZ. Yes we 'chewed a little bit fat' on all things espresso, but it was nice just chatting, and catching up on his news.

Malta isnt currently a "hot bed" of specialty coffee, but things may be about to change very soon....
